Fuel Card Savings Guide
Most fuel cards save $0.20 to $0.60 per gallon at in-network stops. At 1,200 gallons a month and $0.35 off, that is $420 back, or about $0.05 per mile. Here is the worked math, the fee traps, and how to keep the discount as margin.
How much do fuel cards save per gallon?
Work it: 1,200 gallons × $0.35 = $420 a month. At 6.5 MPG, $0.35 ÷ 6.5 = $0.05 per mile. That $0.05 is pure margin if your rates already cover pump price fuel. Discounts vary by stop and week: major chain in-network stops post the deepest cuts, out-of-network pumps post near retail. Track the per-gallon price on every receipt for 30 days and average it. A card that saves $0.50 at two chains you rarely visit and $0.05 everywhere else is worse than a card that saves $0.25 at the ten stops on your lanes. Check live pump spreads against the EIA weekly prices before you commit to a network.
What fees erase fuel card savings?
Four eat the discount. Monthly per-card fees of $2 to $5 that bill whether you fuel or not. Out-of-network transaction fees of $2 to $5 per swipe. ACH rejection and late fees when the weekly draft misfires. And cash advance or ATM fees dressed as convenience. Work your pattern: two cards at $4 a month is $96 a year before a gallon flows. Ten out-of-network swipes at $3 is $30 a month gone. Ask for the full fee sheet in writing, not the sales one pager, and divide total monthly fees by gallons to get the true discount. A $0.35 posted discount minus $45 in fees on 1,200 gallons is really $0.31. Log the net number in your cost per mile fuel line so the calculator uses what you pay, not the pump sign.
Do fuel cards change the surcharge?
No. Bill the surcharge off the EIA average or the agreed baseline, then keep the card discount as your margin. The surcharge calculator prices (current − baseline) ÷ MPG on the index both sides agreed, which is $0.62 per mile at $6.20 current, $2.50 baseline, 6.0 MPG. Your $0.35 card discount never enters that formula. If a broker asks to cut the surcharge because you pay less, decline. The surcharge repays index fuel movement. The card rewards your stop choice. Mixing them hands your savings to the broker. Pair the card with surcharge terms on every rate con and re-check the dry van fuel line monthly as diesel moves.
How do I pick a fuel card?
Match the card to your lanes, not the ads. List your ten most used stops, then ask each card for the discount at those exact locations last month. Prefer daily or weekly drafts that fit your settlement rhythm, IFTA-ready reporting that splits gallons by state for the IFTA calculator, and controls that cap non-fuel spend per driver. Skip cards that force fueling at one chain when your freight runs the other interstate. Re-shop yearly: networks renegotiate and your lanes change, so last year's best card is this year's habit. Keep one backup card with no monthly fee for outages and detours.

Which fuel cards do owner-operators compare?
Shortlist against your ten most-used stops, not ads. Four names come up most in owner-operator discussions — compare each on discounts at your stops, fee sheet, and settlement rhythm before committing:
