Toll Cost Per Mile

Most US lanes cost under $0.05 per mile in tolls, but Northeast corridor runs hit $0.10 to $0.25 per mile for a 5-axle combo. Tolls are small nationally and decisive locally. Here is how to price them per load instead of averaging them away.

What do tolls cost per mile?

National averages mislead because tolls cluster. A Texas regional driver may pay $80 a month ($0.01 per mile); a Northeast regional driver can pay $900 ($0.09 or more).

Lane type2026 typical tollsPer mile
South and Midwest regional$50–$150/mo$0.01–$0.02
PA Turnpike crossings$100–$200 per crossing$0.15–$0.30 on that leg
NJ / NY metro (bridges, tunnels)$100–$200 per entry$0.20–$0.40 on short legs
I-95 corridor week$400–$900/mo$0.05–$0.10 blended
West and Southeast long-haul$30–$100/moUnder $0.01

The worked example in the cost per mile calculator uses $0.03 tolls per mile ($300 over 10,000 miles). Northeast drivers should overwrite that with their lane reality: $800 over 10,000 miles is $0.08, which moves break-even five cents all by itself.

Should you avoid toll roads?

Free route wins only if extra fuel + extra hours cost less than the toll

Run the comparison honestly. A $60 toll that saves 40 miles and 90 minutes saves about $40 in fuel (40 miles at $1.00 fuel per mile) plus 90 minutes of your 70-hour clock, which is worth far more than the remaining $20. Take the toll road. A $60 toll that saves 10 minutes and 5 miles saves $5 in fuel for $60 cash. Take the free road. Toll-tag discounts change the answer: E-ZPass rates often beat cash and toll-by-plate by wide margins, and a single BestPass or PrePass account covering many states plus weigh-station bypass usually pays for itself in the first Northeast week. Check your monthly toll statement line by line; duplicate bridge charges and misclassified axles are common and correctable.

Who pays tolls on a brokered load?

You do, unless the rate con says otherwise. Two approaches both work. Build expected tolls into the required loaded rate: a $2.67 loaded requirement plus $120 tolls over 800 loaded miles becomes $2.82 quoted. Or list tolls as a reimbursable accessorial with receipts, confirmed in writing before the load. Either beats eating them. Enter tolls in the load profit calculator toll field so GO and NO-GO verdicts see the lane as it is, and review the negotiation playbook for how to hold the line when the broker says tolls are included in a rate that clearly omits them.

Toll FAQ

What do tolls cost per mile?

Most US lanes run under $0.05 per mile. Northeast corridor lanes (NJ, NY, PA) run $0.10 to $0.25 per mile for a 5-axle combo and must be priced per load.

Which transponder should truckers get?

E-ZPass for the Northeast and Midwest, plus BestPass or PrePass for multi-state coverage and weigh-station bypass. One account beats five window tags.

Should I avoid toll roads?

Sometimes. A $60 toll that saves 90 minutes and 40 miles beats the free route on fuel and hours. A $60 toll that saves 10 minutes does not.

Who pays tolls, driver or broker?

You do, unless the rate con says otherwise. Build expected tolls into the required rate or list them as a reimbursable line before you roll.
