Truck Maintenance Cost Per Mile

Plan $0.12 to $0.18 per mile for maintenance plus $0.05 to $0.08 for tires in 2026. At 120,000 miles a year that is $20,400 to $31,200 reserved before anything breaks. Here is how to size the fund and where the money actually goes.

Add maintenance to my CPMSee benchmark ranges

What is truck maintenance cost per mile?

Two lines, two behaviors. Routine maintenance is predictable (oil, filters, grease, brakes, belts). Unscheduled repair is lumpy (aftertreatment, turbo, injectors, clutch, suspension). The per-mile reserve smooths both into one number you can price freight against.

Reserve line2026 planning rangePer year at 120,000 mi
Preventive maintenance (oil, filters, grease)$0.03–$0.05/mi$3,600–$6,000
Wear items (brakes, belts, hoses, lights)$0.03–$0.05/mi$3,600–$6,000
Major repair reserve (aftertreatment, turbo)$0.06–$0.08/mi$7,200–$9,600
Maintenance subtotal$0.12–$0.18/mi$14,400–$21,600
Tires (tractor + trailer)$0.05–$0.08/mi$6,000–$9,600
Combined reserve$0.17–$0.26/mi$20,400–$31,200

Newer trucks shift cost from unscheduled to payment; older trucks reverse it. Either way the reserve stays, because a paid-off truck with no reserve is one failure from financed repairs.

How do you size the reserve fund?

Monthly reserve = reserve $/mi × planned miles

At $0.21 combined and 10,000 miles a month, move $2,100 per month into a separate account and touch it only for truck work. Start with a $15,000 floor on day one: DPF cleanings run $400 to $800, a turbo $3,000 to $5,000, injectors $4,000 to $7,000 a set, and a full aftertreatment failure $8,000 to $15,000. The account turns a crisis into an expense. Fund it per settlement, not per month: every load pays its miles into the reserve before you count profit. Enter the per-mile figure in the cost per mile calculator maintenance field so your break-even already includes the next repair.

What PM schedule prevents the big bills?

Four habits beat any brand of oil. Service every 25,000 to 35,000 miles (oil, fuel filters, grease, full inspection) and fix write-ups the same week. Check tire pressure weekly and alignment at least twice a year; under-inflation alone can cost $0.01 to $0.03 per mile in fuel and tire life. Clean the DPF on schedule instead of waiting for derate codes, keep DEF clean and fresh, and never ignore an EGR or boost leak. Track cost per mile monthly: divide shop receipts plus parts by miles run. If the trailing 3-month average climbs past $0.20 maintenance alone (before tires), the truck is telling you something. Compare your number with the benchmark ranges and the cost per mile primer, and size the buffer in the startup guide before the first breakdown, not after.

Maintenance FAQ

What is truck maintenance cost per mile?

Plan $0.12 to $0.18 per mile for maintenance plus $0.05 to $0.08 for tires in 2026. At 120,000 miles a year that is $20,400 to $31,200 set aside before repairs happen.

How big a maintenance reserve do I need?

Hold at least $15,000 in a separate account from day one, then feed it every settlement. One aftertreatment failure can bill $8,000 to $15,000 alone.

What PM schedule works for owner-operators?

Oil and filters every 25,000 to 35,000 miles, grease and inspection with it, overhead at manufacturer intervals, and alignment plus tire pressure checks monthly.

What repair kills owner-operator budgets?

Aftertreatment (DPF, DEF, EGR) on modern diesels, then turbos and injectors. A $300 service skipped repeatedly becomes a $3,000 tow plus a $10,000 shop bill.
